The third Research Data Day took place in Bremen on 11 June 2025 – an event designed to promote exchange on current developments in research data management. Organised by the U Bremen Research Alliance, the day was held under the motto “FAIR Future Skills” and attracted around 200 students and researchers. NFDI4Health contributed with several presentations.

NFDI4Health brought its expertise in health-related research data to the diverse and dynamic Research Data Day in Bremen. The focus was on the practical application of the FAIR principles – an area in which NFDI4Health has been active in health research since 2020.

NFDI Data Bar: Advice and Exchange
Together with ten other Bremen-based consortia, NFDI4Health was represented at the NFDI Data Bar. The team offered one-to-one consultations on key issues in research data management. Participants received information on how to implement the FAIR principles, as well as on topics such as data access, interoperability, and legal frameworks. Around 50 individuals took advantage of the practical exchange to find solutions for their own data projects and identify suitable contacts.

Talk: “Accessing Valuable Health Data” – Making Health Data Reusable
In his talk, Dr. Timm Intemann from NFDI4Health demonstrated how valuable health data from studies can be made available for research in a secure and efficient way – even beyond the original study period. He presented the BIPS Research Data Portal, which offers external researchers straightforward and standardised access options to data. Intemann explained the application process, secure analysis options, and the accompanying support available. Using the Biomarkers4Pediatrics network as an example, he illustrated the potential of globally connected datasets.

Evening Event: FAIR Principles in a Societal Context
The day concluded with a formal evening event at the Bremische Bürgerschaft, moderated by Felix Krömer. Under the theme “Using Data Together: FAIR Solutions for a Better Society”, Prof. Frank Oliver Glöckner welcomed the attendees. In their opening speeches, Senator Kathrin Moosdorf and Prof. Maren Petersen emphasised the importance of an open, secure, and responsible approach to data for scientific progress and societal development. The Data Champion Award 2025 was then presented to three researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute. The keynote was given by Prof. Sonja Schimmler, visiting professor for research data infrastructure at the Technical University of Berlin and research group leader at Fraunhofer FOKUS. She highlighted the necessary steps to improve data infrastructures and increase data literacy. The event concluded with a panel discussion on the significance of data literacy for societal solutions.

The event made clear how essential it is to strengthen data literacy across all age and social groups and to raise awareness of the topic together.
