The development of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) represents a key step towards a more connected and interoperable health data infrastructure across Europe, enabling the use of health data beyond national borders. As part of the European coordination activities under TEHDAS (Towards the European Health Data Space), practical use cases and scientific evidence are being incorporated into the design of this data ecosystem. One such contribution comes from NFDI4Health. The publication by Lendle et al. (2025) on linking health insurance claims data with cancer registry data has been selected as an exemplary study and incorporated into discussions on the development of EHDS standards. Using real-world routine data, the study demonstrates the challenges involved in data linkage and highlights how different linkage methods can affect the quality of research outcomes. In doing so, NFDI4Health makes a tangible contribution to the evidence-based development of European health data frameworks and supports sustainable, future-oriented health research across Europe.
