In this session of the Meet-the-Data series, we shine a spotlight on the data from EBRAINS. Petra Ritter from BIH@Charité and Michael Schirner from Charité will introduce us to their exciting field of work:
Human brain data such as single-subject radiological images, e.g. MRI, contain biometric information and are health data according the EU GDPR and other legislations. Managing and sharing such data requires demonstration of data privacy compliance by the persons who determine the purpose of processing such data. Compliance implies that the appropriate technical and organizational measures are in place to protect the rights of the data subjects. We will present how EBRAINS Health Data Cloud enables discovery of non-sensitive metadata characterizing such health data sets via a public Knowledge Graph while the sensitive data stays protected and is made accessible for secondary research use exclusively when a sequence of legally required steps have been successfully passed. While the process is more complex than just receiving data per button click, it enables the secondary use of health data for research purposes while the protection the rights of the data subjects is maintained.
