The digitisation of medicine has the potential to revolutionise healthcare. By using modern technologies, patient data can be captured, processed, and shared more quickly and accurately. Structured data models play a key role in this process by organising medical information into clearly defined categories. Such models are standardised formats in which data, such as diagnoses, treatment methods, laboratory results, and health study design, are recorded and shared. They enable consistent storage and exchange, allowing different systems to understand and use the data. Currently, a wide variety of models exist worldwide. But how can we ensure they are compatible with one another? How are medical data accurately represented without compromising patient privacy or data protection? How do we know which model is the right one for each situation? And are there ways to harmonise and simplify the formatting and description of health data?
These questions are the focus of the Open Friday Lecture "Data and metadata: moving ahead" with Christian Lovis:
“Digitisation in medicine has focused on structuring data using strongly typed and organised attribute-value entities. This approach has led to an explosion of data models of all sizes, from single clinical observations to very large models, aiming to cover more or less the whole of medicine. At the end of October 2024, Martin Dugas' MDM website listed 25,338 distinct data models. The aim of this presentation is to open a debate on the desirability of finding a way to overcome the dynamics based on the hyperstructuring of medical data and its organization.”
